So what really is encaustic painting?  Here's what Weber says: encaustic noun \ in-ˈkȯ-stik \ Definition of encaustic: a paint made from pigment mixed with melted beeswax and resin and after application fixed by heat also : the method involving the use of encaustic or a work produced by this method

In recent years, artists are discovering the wonder of this art form, and they are finding it overwhelming becuase of all the choices it offers the artist.

Here's what I think, a little story about my journey with beeswax, and what to expect from my workshop...

I have always been a painter, concentrating in oils when I was younger.  I have always loved line, dimension, texture.  I love to draw. I have always been (sorry, Mom) a bit of a pyromaniac, a frustrated sculptor, printmaker, and lover of surprises.  I (literally) ripped through many a canvas trying to achieve my vision when I painted.

Twelve years ago I took a workshop that sounded like fun.  A local art center in Baltimore, The Creative Alliance, had a new artist in residence offering "encaustics", and I fell in love. I had the most amazing moment of joy and connection.  Immediatly, I  switched mediums and my focus. Encaustic painting is the most amazing combination of carving, drawing, mixed media, painting.  It is a beautiful fusion of sculpture, brushwork, and fire. And, no matter how skilled you get, there is always an element of surprise. needs to be executed safely, and correctly.

On Day 1 of my workshop, we learn the correct way to start an encaustic painting so it stands the test of time, we mix medium, we learn line and texture techniques, fusing, and so much more. I provide all materials, brushes, carving tools, torches, irons.

Day 2 is for deeper discovery on your part, with me to guide you.  You'll work on your piece and leave with something you can be proud of.

These workshops are about sharing something I truly love.  We always have such fun, and make great connections.  And get to use torches and melt wax-seriously, WHAT COULD BE BETTER?

Hoping to see you on Nov. 2nd + 3rd, 2019.   "Feel free to contact me with questions".
